George Lucas’ philosophy on high achievement

“You can’t do it if you can’t imagine it.” – George Lucas

Before you have a conversation with yourself about why that quote is Pollyanna, ask yourself a question: what do you spend time imagining? If you imagine this quote is a lie, you will be right. From where you stand, it will be virtually impossible to convince you otherwise.

However, if you see this quote as a possibility, think about how much time you spend imagining what you are committed to achieving in your life. When I say committed, I am distinguishing between
what you want and what you are willing to work for – no matter what.

Nikola Tesla was a genius. He proved the effectiveness of wireless communication more than 100 years ago. He accomplished this in the face of the scientific community laughing at him and calling him insane. The common belief during that time was that a wireless signal would never travel around the earth. It would go into space and travel for infinity. Yet, Tesla was able to imagine it.

In fact, he is said to have imagined every innovation before putting it on paper. He spent time just thinking about how to make an invention work. He imagined the malfunctions and how to fix them in his head. Once he was able to make it work flawlessly, he would put it on paper. He is known to say that in 20 years, that process had never failed him.

Have you attempted something before clearly imagining it? If so, you are not alone. Take a tip from Tesla and Lucas. Imagine it first. Then think about the actions you will have to take and watch yourself do them.

If you practice this enough, you will have the confidence to achieve tasks that once seemed impossible.
