Can Your Transferrable Skills Transform You Into a High Performer?

Can Your Transferrable Skills Transform You Into a High Performer? In an exploratory interview with Sue Firth, she and I uncover the source of high performance for many in business and sports. She and I discussed how personal misfortune can sometimes be the catalyst for becoming extraordinary. In other cases, careers in unrelated fields can provide competencies to transform a team, division or enterprise. In the face of understanding top performers, most breakthrough initiatives fail in organizations. Many believe they fail because people do not want to leave their comfort zone. Yes, that happens. At the same time, when it comes to breakthrough initiatives, people have limiting beliefs associated with the new project. In most cases, the breakthrough may require new skills and competencies to complete. If you believe you do not possess them, you may sabotage the initiative with the belief you are remaining relevant. For sure the new project will require new thinking. Except, it is easier to think the same as you always have. However, it is possible to bridge the gap by first exploring transferrable skills to execute the new initiative. That may make it easier to move the needle and get the project started with minimal delays. When the entire team does this together, new ideas exploode. Then it becomes easier to execute the breakthrough. Do not miss my series of videos on the Disruptive Leadership Model. Is Intentional Disruption Part of Your Corporate Culture?

In part three of the interview with Kim Baillie and Jamie Wadly, we discover practical tactics for building a disruptive corporate culture. One of the things that stops leaders from building that kind of culture is distractions. Many executives believe they have to solve every day problems for their teams, departments or divisions on a daily basis. Being a problem solver pulls executives away from focusing on picture strategy. For many executives, they may be the most talented on their team or division. Therefore, it appears to be efficient for them to solve problems for their people. At the same time, their people become dependent on their problem solving capacities. This can lead to frustration for leadership. They may feel they are constantly putting out fires. That leads them to believe their people are not ready for breakthrough initiatives that can give the organization a competitive edge. They attempt to solve that problem by bringing in a new employee who will have a fresh perspective. The hope is the new person will change the corporate culture. Yet, that rarely works. The new hire eventually gets sucked into the prevailing culture. Needless to say, this kind of environment is rarely conducive for disruptive strategies. In the interview, we took a deep dive into counterintuitive tactics for building a nimble enterprise that solves problems without input from leadership. I used real world situations from my experience as a chief operating officer to illustrate how to transform culture from dependent staff and management to self contained. In fact, they became so self contained they told the president and I to go away and work on big picture strategies. And that allowed us to grow at unprecedented rates and add new services that may have appeared disruptive in the past. Do not miss my series of videos on the Disruptive Leadership Model. What Are the Traps High Performing Leaders Face That No One Discusses?

What Are the Traps High Performing Leaders Face That No One Discusses? In part two of an interview with Kim Baillie and Jamie, we uncover the secret behind why many CEOs find themselves overwhelmed. It may be a major reason many leaders find it lonely at the top. Perhaps the source of that loneliness is related to a past event that shaped their mindset. At the same time, we explored how the CEO’s job may never be replaced by artificial intelligence. Whatever it takes to be a visionary may be beyond AI’s capacity. Therefore, it is important that CEOs develop strong visionary capacities. To do that, there will be many beliefs from the CEO’s personal past that have to be unlearned. In addition, there are societal beliefs that serve as traps in the human paradigm that also need to be unlearned. Do not miss my series of videos on the Disruptive Leadership Model.
