While
there are many ways to master your craft, there are three methods that are
common to all successful people.
They
Take Risks –
Those who master anything understand that life is like riding a bicycle. Most
people can get on a bike and ride. However, the stunts you have to perform to
compete in the X Games would be too risky for the majority of people. Every
stunt has the possibility of injury. Yet, the competitors in the X Games make
it look simple and elegant. The winner is usually the person who successfully
completes the most difficult moves.
In
life, if you stay on the
same path as everyone else and you avoid obstacles,
you will never become noticed as an outstanding performer. However, if you measure
the risks, constantly develop yourself and push a little further, you will
learn new skills and competencies. In time, you will be seen as the person who
can perform tasks that others avoid. As you get better, you slowly reduce the
risks. And it becomes easier to raise the stakes on your goals and objectives.
They
Practice – To
raise the stakes requires elevated levels of confidence. Increased confidence
comes from practice. The cyclist who has the patience to perform the same
difficult stunt over and over eventually masters it. Repetition may appear to
be a way to make an action automatic. From another perspective, it may be the
best way to eliminate bad habits. By practicing what you want to accomplish
over and over, it eventually becomes a part of who you are. As a result, you
create a character and ability that resembles your objective.
They
Develop a Winning State of Mind – State of mind may be most difficult. In fact, it
has to come before risk taking and practice. And it too has to be practiced. In
addition, it is risky to step out of your normal state of mind. Developing a
new way of thinking can be confusing at first. This may be the major deterrent
for those attempting new and greater accomplishments. As you develop clearer
mental images and thought processes, the goal becomes easier. Those images and
thoughts are what shape your actions. If fear is in your state of mind, you may
lack the confidence to take appropriate actions.
To
enhance your state of mind, it is wise to surround yourself with successful
people. It is a form of mental practice that keeps the mind focused on the
goal. As you practice conversations with other successful people, you receive
positive feedback or questions that help you view the situation from another
perspective. Developing new perspectives will help you take mental risks. It
also helps uncover blind spots. Furthermore, there may be people who have
already accomplished what you would like to pursue and can help you avoid the
pitfalls.
Those
who say success is a matter of luck, family name or genetics have not taken the
time to understand what successful people do in their private time. While
others are sleeping or partying, the most successful are developing their mind
and practicing their craft. That in itself helps them reduce the risk.
What do you think? I’m open to ideas. Or if you want to
write me about a specific topic, let me know.
I think this is amazing, that's what I think! Definitely something I will carry into the new year and for the rest of my life. Thank you so much.
